Opening holding: does it change the number of shares?
On the passbook, a opening holding line reads: not a change in the number of shares
An opening holding line
Not a change: it gives the number held before the period, so the new total can be worked out.
Worked example
An opening line set EXA at 1,000 shares before the period, on Tue 30 Jun 2026. Day 14 is Tue 14 Jul 2026, a working day, so the report-by date is Tue 14 Jul 2026 (national holidays only; set your state and its public holidays move it too). It is not a change; it lets the ready-to-enter table print a new total for EXA once the later lines are read.
The rules behind it
For a opening holding line: The total number of shares. Sources: Services Australia, online account help for updating shares.
The rule. Report a change in shares within 14 days. Named in the sources: a buy, a sale, bonus shares. Any other change to the total number of shares the form asks for: report or confirm. A price movement is not on the list; listed shares are revalued on 20 March and 20 September. Every rule and its source.
What it takes. Trade lines only: date, code, buy or sell, quantity. Recognised account and holder numbers are removed; nothing leaves your browser until you save.
