Every rule, and the page it comes from
Thirteen rules, each resting on official pages read on 28 Sep 2026. Nothing is stated that its source does not say; where the sources do not settle a case, the rule is a question to confirm with Services Australia.
The rule. Report a change in shares within 14 days. Named in the sources: a buy, a sale, bonus shares. Any other change to the total number of shares the form asks for: report or confirm. A price movement is not on the list; listed shares are revalued on 20 March and 20 September. Every rule and its source.
What it takes. Trade lines only: date, code, buy or sell, quantity. Recognised account and holder numbers are removed; nothing leaves your browser until you save.

- The 14 daysAn Age Pension recipient has 14 days to tell Services Australia about a change in their circumstances, including a change in their income and assets and in their financial investments.
- Buying or selling sharesBuying or selling shares is one of the events an Age Pension recipient must notify within the 14-day notification period, whether the recipient or their partner made the trade.
- Bonus sharesReceiving bonus shares is one of the events an Age Pension recipient must notify within the 14-day notification period.
- The total number of sharesThe online shares form asks for the ASX code or security code, the total number of shares, your share of ownership and your partner's, and a date; removing a holding asks for the date it was removed. Any line that adds or removes shares changes the total you last gave.
- Dividend reinvestmentA dividend reinvestment allocation adds shares to the holding, so the total number of shares the form asks for is no longer the one you last gave. The official pages read do not name dividend reinvestment as a separate event: report or confirm the new total with Services Australia.
- Splits, consolidations, demergers and schemesA split, a consolidation, a demerger or scheme scrip changes the number of shares held, or adds a new code, without a buy or a sale. The official pages read do not name these events: the number changed, so report or confirm the new total with Services Australia. A code or name change is a third case: the number of shares may not change, but the holding identifier the shares form holds does, so update the code the form holds, and confirm.
- A holding removedWhen a takeover, a scheme or a delisting removes a holding, the shares form's removal step asks for the date the shares were removed. Whether the event counts as a sale for the notification list is not settled by the pages read: report or confirm with Services Australia.
- Transfers in and outA transfer in or out changes the number of shares held and the total the form asks for. A transfer for nothing in return, or for less than the shares were worth, is a gift under the gifting rules. Two different rules then apply: the Guide lists gifting more than $2,000 worth of assets in an income year as an event to notify within 14 days, and separately the gifting free area sets how much can be given away before the gift counts in the income and assets tests. The free-area amounts are not stated here: Services Australia's gifting page names the free area and links to the amounts.
- A change in valueServices Australia revalues listed shares itself on 20 March and 20 September each year, using the latest prices it holds, and when you ask it to. A price movement is not on the list of events to notify; a change in the number of shares is.
- A weekend or public holidayWhere the 14 days end on a weekend or a public holiday, the notification period ends on the next working day. With a state or territory set, this checker moves the date past weekends, national public holidays and that state's whole-day public holidays as its government lists them for the years held; with no state set it uses national holidays only and says so, because a state public holiday may move the date one more day.
- A partner's sharesA change in a partner's income or assets is also a change to report, and the shares form asks for your share of ownership and your partner's.
- The date the 14 days run fromThe notification period runs from the date of the event. This checker counts from the trade date, the earlier date, and shows the settlement date beside it; where a history gives only the settlement date, it counts from that and says so, and the trade may have happened a few days earlier: confirm with Services Australia.
- Selling one holding and buying anotherA sale and a buy are each an event to notify, so a switch from one holding to another is two changes, reported together, even when the amounts match.
- Other notification periodsThe general notification period is 14 days, and this checker counts 14. The Guide lists other periods for some recipients: 28 days for certain recipients living overseas and for bereavement events, 7 days after becoming aware of a compensation payment, and a recipient who leaves Australia permanently or for at least 12 months moves to 28 days. If a different period applies, confirm with Services Australia.
- A cash dividendA cash dividend leaves the number of shares unchanged, so it is not a change in the number of shares. The cash lands in a bank account, and bank accounts and cash are financial investments on Services Australia's financial investments page, so other income or asset reporting may apply; this checker does not read it.
