Transfer out: does it change the number of shares?

On the passbook, a transfer out line reads: holding changed: report or confirm

Shares transferred out for no price

A transfer out changes the total. If nothing, or less than the shares were worth, came back, it is a gift under the gifting rules, and the Guide lists gifting more than $2,000 worth of assets in an income year as an event to notify.

Worked example

An off-market transfer moved 500 EXH shares out, from 500 to 0, with no price recorded, on Fri 11 Dec 2026. Day 14 is Fri 25 Dec 2026, which falls on Christmas Day, so the period ends on the next working day, Mon 28 Dec 2026 (national holidays only; set your state and its public holidays move it too). Christmas is why the date moves so far. With no price, finding 6 asks whether anything came back: the notification item and the gifting free area are two different rules.
